【李尔王话剧剧本英文】Title: King Lear – A Dramatic Tale of Power, Madness, and Redemption
By William Shakespeare
Act I, Scene I
The Palace of King Lear in Britain.
Enter KENT, GLOSTER, and EDMUND.
KENT:
My lord, the king is coming. Let us stand aside.
GLOSTER:
I pray you, do so. I have a letter for your grace.
EDMUND:
(aside)
A letter? For the king? I wonder what it contains. But I must not let my father know I am here. He will be angry if he finds out I was eavesdropping.
KENT:
What is this, my lord?
GLOSTER:
It is from France, my lord. The French king has sent a message to the king about his daughter Cordelia.
EDMUND:
(whispering)
Cordelia... she is the youngest daughter. She refused to flatter her father, and now she is banished. How cruel that the king would turn away his own child for speaking the truth.
KENT:
This is a most serious matter. We must prepare for the king’s arrival.
GLOSTER:
Yes, we must. And I must find a way to inform the king of the contents of this letter without being discovered.
They exit as KING LEAR enters with his daughters, CORDELIA, REGAN, and GONERIL.
KING LEAR:
Now, daughters, tell me which of you loves me most.
GONERIL:
My lord, I love you more than words can express.
REGAN:
And I, my father, love you beyond all measure.
CORDELIA:
I cannot speak in such a way, my lord. My love is bound by duty, not by words.
KING LEAR:
Then you are not fit to inherit anything. You are ungrateful.
GONERIL:
He is right, father. She should be punished for her silence.
REGAN:
Let her go, then. She has no place in our kingdom.
KING LEAR:
So be it. I give you both my lands and titles. But you, Cordelia, shall have nothing.
CORDELIA:
Then I shall leave, and take my sorrow with me.
She exits, followed by KENT and others.
EDMUND:
(whispering)
This is the beginning of the end. The king is blinded by his pride, and the true heirs are cast aside. I must find a way to gain power in this chaos.
He exits, plotting his next move.
Act II, Scene I
The Duke of Gloucester's castle.
Enter GLOSTER and EDMUND.
GLOSTER:
Edmund, I have heard that the king has divided his kingdom between Goneril and Regan. But he has also sent Cordelia away.
EDMUND:
That is true, my lord. But I believe there is more to this than meets the eye.
GLOSTER:
What do you mean?
EDMUND:
I have heard rumors that the French king is planning to invade Britain to support Cordelia. If this is true, it could bring war upon our land.
GLOSTER:
Then we must act quickly. We cannot allow this to happen.
EDMUND:
I agree. But I also have my own plans. I will use this chaos to rise in power.
GLOSTER:
You are ambitious, Edmund. But I hope you do not betray me.
EDMUND:
Never, my lord. I am loyal to you.
They exit, each with their own secret intentions.
Act III, Scene I
A field near the palace.
Enter KENT, disguised as a servant, and a Gentleman.
KENT:
I have been wandering for days, trying to find some way to help the king. But he is lost in his madness.
GENTLEMAN:
He is indeed. His mind is broken, and his daughters treat him with cruelty.
KENT:
I must find a way to reach him before it is too late.
GENTLEMAN:
If only the king could see the truth. But he is too proud to listen.
They exit as the storm begins to rage outside.
Act IV, Scene I
The battlefield.
Enter EDGAR, disguised as a madman, and a Fool.
EDGAR:
O, the gods! What a cruel world this is. I have lost everything—my family, my name, my sanity.
FOOL:
You are not the only one, my friend. The king has lost his mind, and the kingdom is falling apart.
EDGAR:
But there is still hope. One day, the truth will come to light, and justice will be done.
FOOL:
I hope so. But until then, we must endure.
They walk off into the storm.
Act V, Scene I
The battlefield again.
Enter ALBANY, GONERIL, and other nobles.
ALBANY:
We have defeated the French army, but at a great cost.
GONERIL:
It was necessary. The king must pay for his foolishness.
ALBANY:
But what of Cordelia? She was innocent.
GONERIL:
She was a traitor. She sought to overthrow her father.
ALBANY:
No, she was only trying to restore what was right.
Enter KENT, EDGAR, and others.
KENT:
The king is dying. He has suffered greatly.
EDGAR:
And Cordelia has been killed. Her death is a tragedy.
ALBANY:
Then the time has come for a new ruler. One who will lead with wisdom and compassion.
They all look toward the heavens, mourning the loss of their loved ones.
